How to Determine the Right Size Rug for Your Living Room

If you've decided you want to decorate your living room with an area rug, the next step is to determine what size rug you need. It can be challenging to figure out exactly how large a rug you want to buy, but our checklist of guidelines will help you meet these challenges successfully. Here's how to determine the right size rug for your living room.

Measure the Space for Your Entire Seating Area and Then Size Up

In the main living area of a home, the area rug ideally needs to be big enough for the couch, chairs and loveseat to all be placed on top of the rug.

If the rug isn't quite big enough for all your living room furniture to fit on top of it, it's important to be consistent in your furniture placement. For example, it's better to have all the pieces placed with their front legs on the rug and back legs off the rug than it is to have some pieces placed all the way on the rug and others placed all the way off the rug. You want to avoid having lonely furniture pieces that appear to be floating off on their own and excluded from the main living area.

Allow 8 Inches or More on Each Side of the Couch

You want to avoid having a rug that measures the same width as your couch. Ideally there should be at least 8 inches worth of rug space on either side of the couch.

Don't Pick Your Rug Size Based on Price

If rug price is a critical consideration for your family, keep in mind that it's preferable to get the right size rug in a less expensive style than it is to get a higher quality rug that's too small. Small rugs tend to be the least expensive, but it would be a mistake to choose the smallest rug just because it's the one that best fits into your budget.

If You Have a Square Room, Buy a Square Rug

If your room is shaped like a rectangle, it would be a mistake to buy a square rug. If your room is shaped like a square, it would be a mistake to buy a rectangular rug. In most cases you also want to avoid buying round rugs for a living room.

Now you're educated about how to determine the right size rug for your living room. We hope these tips will empower you to choose exactly the right rug that will enhance your space and make the living room in your real estate purchase feel more like home. Happy decorating!
